Mini-itx file hosting

Mini-itx
I've finally found a suitable case (and cashflow) for my old mini-itx motherboard (EPIA-M 1000) I've had laying around. The specs aren't too bad - 1ghz C3 cpu, a gigabyte of RAM, 160 gigabyte hdd, and a 52x cd drive. I am still missing one crucial part for me to use this as a file server - a network card. Athough I do have built-in 10/100, I'd like to go wireless since I don't have my own router (it's in another part of the house) but, I have no clue as to what kind of card I can easily use in Linux (comments welcome ;D).

Right now, it acts as another space heater in my room and my ad-hoc cooling solution is having a hard time keeping up. Eventually, I'll have a few fans installed into my desk so I can actually close the door on the computer cabinet; until then I'll use my current 'clip a fan on the desk and point it so it blows air into the cabinet' setup.

As for software, I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed currently. If anyone has some suggestion as to what software I should implement, I'm all ears. Once I have it networked, I was also planning to install the F@H client (Folding at Home) so I can rack up more points for Team Hack-a-day (my profile, Team HAD's profile).

prism2 chipset

I've used the old Prism2 based cards in linux with no problem. I've never tried, but I believe there are also compatible USB 802.11 adapters. You should definately check out the latter since you may want to use your available pci slot for something else (I'm thinking a video tuner card for mine).

By the way, what are the specs on that case's power supply? I'm suprised it's heating your room noticably. My mini-itx box seems to run much cooler than any laptop I have.

200 watt psu

Well, the mini-itx isn't really the problem the computer that sits above it is the main culprit but, since my main computer puts off a bit of heat, the added (although small) amount of heat is noticable to me. It has a tiny 200 watt psu. I will probably go with an pci wireless card; my main box allready has a tv tuner (plus some 8 other usb devices). Thanks for the reply.

*Now that I think of it, a usb adapter might be nice. I could easily postition the adapter to get the best signal strenght.

Update

I've decided to go with a pci card (if I am having signal troubles I can just buy [or make] an antenna). I decided on a TRENDnet TEW-443PI. If anyone else needs to find a wireless card that works under linux (especially in Ubuntu), the Ubuntu help forums have you covered.
