gwaereth's blog

Ok, so I haven't posted in a year, but I've been busy helping my wife have our first child. Ok, and by helping, I mean not pissing her off ;) But I digress...

Anyway, I was surprised to see that this hadn't made it to ol' BlogCadre yet, from ABCNews.com:

"Beaming people in Star Trek fashion is still in the realms of science fiction but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality."

So what if it was a half a meter, that's freakin' sweet!
Beam over and check it out.

Wi-Fi on the farm

I saw this and I just knew that Jason would love something like this. I like it because, aside from being cool use of wireless, it's practical. Meaning, it's growing out of the realm of geekdom and wild eyed conjecture.

From CNN:

Wi-Fi on the farm
World's largest hotspot stretches over fields of onions

HERMISTON, Oregon (AP) -- Parked alongside his onion fields, Bob Hale can prop open a laptop and read his e-mail or, with just a keystroke, check the moisture of his crops.

A Smurfin' Movie Deal

Cruising the morning news outlets for opinions of our potentially newest Supreme Court Justice, and stumbled onto this little nugget.

It would seem that there has been a deal struck to bring the Smurfs, those loveable blue buggers, to the 3D big screen.

Now, I don't know about all of you, but I loved the smurfs. I loved that they cussed, in their own little way, and I loved that it was always a happy ending. Of course, I was 8, but you've got to instill that sense of false serenity in a child early on...

In any case, here's the full article at abcnews.com, I hope you smurfin' enjoy it!

The True Geek Test

Ok, so there was an article on CNN about geek/nerd pride, and it made reference to the "The True Geek Test"

So, as I consider myself something of a Geek, I had to google it and go take it.

I got an 88%. The sheer fact that the author asked a
question loosely paraphrased here as:

"You have a sword, +2 vs Elves. What does that mean?"

Made me very happy. It's a great test. Have fun!

Just remember to hydrate

Ok, so summer is great, it really is. You can bike to work at full tilt and enjoy the wind whistling through your helmet.

However, just try and remember that when you do that, and it's a heat index of 90F+, with heavy humidity, that you're pushing your limits. Or at least, I was yesterday.

Yesterday on my ride in, I basically put the hammer down and was having a blast, sweating my brains out, literally...

By midday, I had a dehydration induced migraine the size of a freaking jackhammer going off in my head. I promptly left work, went home, drank what seemed like a tank of water, and passed out for about 3 hours. All was well.
