I finally got a chance to put WM5 through it's paces today on a Cingular Wizard and I really like what I see, especially from a blogger's point of view. I posted earlier about some of the difficulties with mobile blogging and while it's still not perfect, I'm at least able to get the job done without installing a bunch of add-on software.
The biggest improvement in my opinion is the ability to do http post file uploads from pocket IE. Prior to WM5, there was no real way to, say, take a photo and upload it to your blog. As you can see by the attached crummy camera phone image, it's now possible to really take advantage of camera equipped devices. Additionally, the new OS comes with a very rudamentary photo editor. It's no photoshop, but it allows you to rotate and crop photos that you've taken... a bare minimum for the mobile blogger.
From a hardware perspective, I'm seeing most of the new Pocket PC devices with a front facing, or slide-out keyboard. This was a must have feature, and I think the new devices are finally caught up with the blackberries in terms of hardware usability.
So what's still missing?
- full javascript/DOM support
- support for popups and multiple windows
- tabbed browsing
- more full featured image editor
- cut/paste links and image urls from pocket ie
The mobile version of mozilla looks really promising and may solve many of these issues. You can bet I'll be checking it out very soon, but currently I need to get to a PC in order to install it (come on guys).
Does anyone have any experience blogging with other devices? Please leave a comment. It would be cool to do a comparison.
