Is the iPod the Next Cellphone?

I was browsing the web, looking for some cool news, and I came accross this. Apparently, you can now order iPods pre-loading from this company with engraving, pictures, music, and video from you wedding in both his and her models. This got me thinking. If people are willing to make iPods a part of their weddings, then what is next for the little media device? It seems that as time goes on, iPods are becoming a necessity, rather than a cool gadget that only a few people have. It seems to me as though everything Apple releases is now "cool," "hip," or "tredny." Now I have nothing against Apple at all, and the only reason I don't have an iBook or PowerBook is because I don't want to buy all of my software again for the mac, as all of my licenses for high-end programs (i.e. Photoshop) are for Windows distributions. Maybe I'm just ranting, but what happened to the good old days when nobody used Apples, and the rivalry between PC and Mac users was actually heated. Nowadays, Apple has increased their market share by a large proportion, and even has stores around the country. I think that soon, everyone will own an iPod, and that within 10 years, Mac s will account for half of personal computers nationwide.

Umm.. No I don't think so

There is one problem I have with iPods and that is iTunes, now I know you can put on anything from your own cd collection but it only works with iTunes and nothing else. In my opinion, This should be treated the same way as the internet explorer monopoly case a few years ago. Apple has a history of making things that are not compatable with any other technology out there, and that is a business practace I just cannot support.

Well...

Well, there are third party programs that allow you to update your ipod with other media programs, such as winamp, but I do see what you're saying. Someone shouldn't have to pay more money to buy third party software to update their iPod if they don't like iTunes. They should move to a drag-n-drop system or something of the like. Good arguement.

Oh..

I actually didn't know about the third party programs for that. But really what I was refering to was the Proprietary mindset of the apple company itself back when computers were in thier infancy they didn't allow anybody to use thier archetecture as opposed to the IBM and the clones. As you know, most software companies gravitated to writing software that could run on multiple platforms not wanting to lock into a single platform. I do know about the intel chip macs now and believe in this day and age there is a convergence of the two technologies and it is getting more universal in the Desktop Computer area. But now here is a new technology that Apple's intent is to try to lock everybody into using thier service.

I was talking to my wife about the issue and we both agree that modify the your iPod statment to generic portable media player we would say whole-heartedly that most people will end up having a Mediaplayer, Cellphone, and PDA hanging from their belts. Hopefully some company can come up with some kick butt combination that does all of those functions well... All i have seen is good cellphones with halfassed media and PDA functions or some other poor combination.

PS. did you hear the Govorment wants to shutdown the blackberry and all of the service for it.

Blackberry

Really? I thought Blackberry went out of business. What do they want to shut it down for?
