Wii: A Short Review

Nintendo WiiOf the past 3 days since the Wii came out, about 15 hours of it have been spent playing or watching my friend's Nintendo Wii. Of all the systems I've played, it is by far the most innovative, intuitive, fun, and easy to use system by far. The controls are crisp and responsive, the graphics are exactly as I expected, and the functionality of it is tenfold what I thought it'd be. Even the defacto game that comes with it, Wii Sports, is downright addictive. Red Steel, a first person shooter is also hours of fun. But the best experience yet has been the new Legend of Zelda. I just finished the first temple of the game and I had to pry myself out of the chair to leave.

System-wise, it is beautiful. The system is silent, small, and ergonomically designed. It runs off a modified Power PC chip, with unreleased specs, and has built in flash memory and an SD card slot in front. I'm expecting a hack to get Linux on it within the coming months, enabling transfer of savegames, MP3 playback, maybe XGL effects, web browsing (which will be coming soon anyways with the Nintendo-spec Opera browser [Wii-mote mouse gestures!!!!!!]), and anything else you can think of doing on a wifi-capable, bluetooth-capable computer. I plan on making progress getting a Linux distro ready for it over December, but we'll see how much I get done with that.

Overall, I give it a wayyyyyy big two thumbs up, and recommend it for everyone; especially those who haven't played video games.

i'm sold!
