Sarcastic Wednesday

Is Sarcastic Wednesday a holiday I missed out on? I got the most hysterical ecard from a friend today for Sarcastic Wednesday. So I googled it, and had about 100 results. Why am I the last to know?

If you're a cube dweller like myself, you'll love Hallmark's interpretation of Sarcastic Wednesday.

Mr. Men & Little Miss

Do you remember the Mr. Men and Little Miss books? Does Little Miss Sunshine or Mr. Lazy ring a bell? In my search for finding other sites to create characters (read: waste time), I've found Create your own Mr. Men and Little Miss.

Technically geared toward children, and not quite as robust as the M&M maker or the South Park Characters - but a little fun, and a little nostalgia.

Introducing Little Miss MichelleyG!

If you're a Silence of the Lambs fan - a tour company in Lithuania is offering Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lector tours.

The tour includes a trip around Vilnius, a visit to a nearby estate for a "Hannibal feast" and a meeting with "Lecter." The cost is $131, or 100 euros.

I'm not sure I want to know what is served at a Hannibal Feast!

Via: CNN Offbeat News

On a side note: Today is also Lithuania's Independence Day, 1918.

The Inverse Power of Praise

I was tipped off to this article by a friend. It discusses the difference between praising your children for being smart, vs. praising them for working hard and how that alters some of the choices they make.

It's a long read, but an interesting read - especially if you were one of the smart kids that didn't really work too hard. Do you think it made a difference in school? Do you still think it makes a difference in what you choose to take on?

How about the hard workers...were you jealous of the smart kids, because they just got it and didn't have to work at it?

Curious how different animals mate? Skip Animal Planet, and the library - instead head to your local zoo. Several zoos throughout the US are offering Valentines Day Sex Tours complete with Champagne, Chocolate Covered Strawberries, and Sex...well you're not guarenteed to see any animal Jungle Love but you'll leave with a wealth of useless trivia.

Some of the cool things you might learn (Note: These are taken from the article, so I can't verify the facts are correct.)

* "Whales have like 10-foot-long whatevers."
* "Male pigs have a unique corkscrew endowment and impressive output"
* "Manatees have orgies and do not really care whether their partners are male or female"
* "A male porcupine has only one four-hour window a year to mate -- and they have to proceed very carefully with the female of the species."

Via: CNN Offbeat News

Duped Dads Fight Back

This is a little more serious than what's usually out here...I found an article on Time Magazine Online regarding fathers who after they get a divorce from their wives, find out that they are not the baby's daddy. Sometimes this is when the child is 6 or 7 or even 30. Do they still have to pay child support? Current laws, yes. But there are several states looking into other solutions.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I understand the rights of the man who has been duped. But I also feel sorry for the child. Can you image if you were 7 years old, and all of a sudden the man you called "daddy" wanted nothing to do with you anymore. (I know this happens in a lot of cases with the biological father - fortunately, this idea is inconcievable to me). And what about the mother - how does she get off being a poopy head?

The End of an Era

One year, when I was a kid, I don't remember my age, my family rented a VCR from the local video store. We each had the opportunity to pick out a movie. I don't remember everything we got, but I do remember The Dark Crystal and Chatterer the Squirrel. I remember it being a great holiday!

Now, much to my saddness:

After a long illness, the groundbreaking home-entertainment format VHS has died of natural causes in the United States. The format was 30 years old.

Theory on Fat

Disclaimer: I know I'm a few sandwiches short of a picnic, so there’s no need to mock me.

At some point in high school, and maybe even in college you probably heard of the Law of Conservation of Energy.

In case you skipped that day…Energy is neither created or destroyed, it transforms. The chemical energy in the food you eat transforms into kinetic energy when you walk. The potential energy possessed by the bucket full of water perched on top of the door transforms into kinetic energy when the door is opened and the contents fall on the person below. This probably also causes thermal energy because the target it so ticked off they turn red.

I believe that there should be a similar theory for fat. I’ve toyed with this for some time, looking to perfect it, but have decided to share it, in its current state.

My Last Political Campaign Rant for the Year!

Today's the day! Tonight when I watch TV I won't be slammed by political ads. I was curious, so I kept tally last night while watching the 10pm news on KARE-11. From the time the announcer said "You're Watching Kare-11 News in High Definition" until the music for the Jay Leno show started There were 24 commercials. This is probably a 35 minute space.

Here's the break down:

10 were negative campaign ads (4 of the 10 were not endorsed by the opposing candidate, but instead by outside interest groups.)

11 were positive campaign ads - meaning supporting the candidate, not slamming the opposition.

3 were non political (one for Toyota and the other 2 for NBC shows.)

My favorite of all the ads is the one that starts: "You're Mike Hatch and you've got problems" It's my favorite only becuase I just think it's a silly commercial, I have no idea what it says other than :"You're Mike Hatch and you've got problems" it's just seems like a third grader thing to say...No really, I'm not Mike Hatch, I do have problems, the first one is that you think I'm Mike Hatch.

Here's my last political rant. According to Jay Leno in his monologue last night (let's assume he's got his facts right) $2.6 BILLION dollars was spent on political ads. Which averages out to $8.60 per person!!! As Jay said, I'd rather have the $8.60!
