Deer Park

So you all propably already know about Firefox - in fact you're probably using it right now (and if you aren't, you should get it right now (hint hint)). It's been close to a year since they finished their first release, and since then, they've been hard at work making a new version, Firefox 1.5. If you want to test it, it's now available as Deer Park Alpha 2.

I've been using the Alpha for the past week, and here's what I've found:

First up, everything seems exactly the same. There isn't much that has changed from the public release of Firefox, in terms of the user interface. All of your buttons are in the same place as they would be on the normal release of Firefox. Most of my extensions worked straight away, with only one being disabled due to incompatability. But, after a closer look, I found some really cool new features.
The Preferences/Options menu has been completely redone, and that seems to make a lot more sense now. The new window gives you far better control over your tab browsing (such as preventing sites from opening new windows, and instead putting them into tabs), security (such as being able to instantly wipe all saved passwords and history - a lifesaver for all you porn browsers out there :P).
There's also a new software update engine which allows you to upgrade Firefox a lot more easily than the old version, and the update message is a lot bolder than it was in version 1.0.

The tabbed browsing features in Firefox 1 were lacking in features. The new version allows for much more in the way of tabs - you can now re-arrange their order in the browser window by dragging them -- you are no longer stuck with the order you opened the tabs in.

One thing I noticed, as a Linux user, was that they have greatly fixed up a lot of the user interface, and it now matches most of my applications a lot better than the previous version, however, I think most of these issues were already fixed with the Windows version.

All in all, the new version of Firefox is going to be very good - the Beta version will be available from the Mozilla Website on Friday - so, head over there and download a copy.

I've been using Deer Park as part of the Flock beta beta. There's quite a few quirks and bugs, but altogether it's a pretty stable. Link via broadband reports: Deer Park | BlogCadre. So you all propably already know about

The kings of "alternative" internet software, Mozilla, releases version 1.5 beta of sleek browser Firefox. A short review of it here ...

Fantastic update, but I

Fantastic update, but I think I've seen it somewhere.

Oh wait, I remember... Once again, they copied everything from Opera.

Ya, and Firefox is

Ya, and Firefox is completely alone in that respect. I mean noone in the software industry has ever taken a feature from another competeing product and included it in theirs.

Oh wait, I'm lying, this kind of thing happens all the time and your just a troll.

Not quite everything...

Everything except the price tag!

All I want to know is...

Have they fixed the embarrassing memory leak?

Much better

Ive been running dear park alpha 2 for a while now, and dont have the problem with memory leak NEARLY as bad. It doesnt ever reach 200 megs any more either which is a plus.

Memory leak still there

I ran some test and posted them on my blog. The latest version still has the same nasty memory leak. I ran it for an hour and it had peaked at almost 140MB. Not good.

Good review

Good review, although a little short for my liking.
The current Alpha build (Deer Park Alpha 2) is only a devlopment test of such, so we will not see any mojor new features until Beta 1, and possibly even Beta 2.

There's also blazing back

There's also blazing back and forward, which is quite nice. You can view some of the new changes here.

I'm not using Firefox..

... and I won't. Not everyone not using Firefox is using MSIE (hint hint hint)!

You Missed SVG

One big feature they added in Firefox 1.5 is beginning support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). Check out the menu on my site and the Tetris game I wrote. All done without plugins.

Does anyone know when the OS

Does anyone know when the OS X version comes out? Dunno if I'm into all this testing bug filled betas though. But the geek in me want to try it out anyway :)

OS X version is already

OS X version is already available :)

There aren't many major bugs in the Alpha - today's BETA should be chrystal clean.
