Odd shaped watermelons are nothing new. The first oddball was developed 20 years ago by a farmer in Kagawa, Japan in the shape of a cube. The purpose? It would store better in a refrigerator. Clever idea, indeed. However, growing the melon in this matter effected the sweetness of the melon, therefore, causing them to be sold solely as decorations. Since that time, watermelons have been cultivated into other shapes such as a pyramid and a human face.
Because only a small number of these melons can be produced each year, they are not cheap. A cubic melon can cost you approximately $98 and the more intricate melons can cost up to $650. -- Link
