a cardboard box upright bass

I seek brutal criticism for my homemade bass.

I made a cardboard box upright bass using scrap oak flooring as the neck, and i made a pickup by breaking away the plastic casing of a Radio Shack Science Project Buzzer, and strings are weed whacker twine and the tuners are faucet-spiggots.

The cardboard bass plays great and sounds wonderful.

This is truly a homemade upright bass. Neck is a board, strings are weed whacker cord, tuning knobs are faucit handles, body is a cardboard box, and pickup is a RadioShack piezo buzzer with the body removed. A...

Here's a wonderful stand--up bass made out of a cardboard box, Radio Shack parts and weed-whacker twine: I made a cardboard box upright bass using scrap oak flooring as the neck, and i made a pickup by breaking away the plastic casing of a Radio Shack Science Project Buzzer, and strings are weed whacker twine and the tuners are faucet-spiggots. Chris Badynee made his very own upright bass with scrap oak flooring, plastic casing of a Radio Shack science project buzzer, weed whacker twin and faucet spiggots... Thanks Jason! - Link. Related: Making the pickup from a radio shack...

wooden upright video with cardboard box bass

I have a video comparing my cardboard bass with a wood ¾ size double bass shown here
pretty dammm close, if ya ask me (then again, I made the box bass)
we did a 3 hour improve video session and this is the first minute of how we met in a small studio near Detroit.

hope you don't mind

i went ahead and edited your post to embed the video and published it to the front page.

Cardboard Bass

No brutal crit here! A stroke of genius as far as I'm concerned. Weed whacker cord for string? Wonderful. Who knew?

That absolutely RULES. It

That absolutely RULES. It actually sounds great!

even more ghetto (but with less drilling)

is a regular speaker style pickup. Just take one of those mini-speakers from radio shack or a little portable radio or whatever, place the speaker side onto the front of your (acoustic) guitar with a big rubber band and wire up the terminals to a guitar cord (hint... one wire per terminal, two wires total) and tada!

Granted, I don't have cool sound graphs to prove that it doesn't suck really bad, but, seriously... if you are taping or rubberbanding a transducer to your guitar, do you /really/ care?

Also, if you have a nice acoustic.. PLEASE DON'T DRILL HOLES IN IT!!!!

Cardboard Bass

Post the plans! This thing is great.

PLANS!

I agree, this thing looks and sounds so spiffy, that you need to post the build details so we can all give it a try! Is the body truly cardboard? Wouldn't that suffer under the taught strings?

rain

the coup would be a video of you playing it in the rain...
nice job. made any other instruments before?

cardboard bass

the neck goes thru the body and the strings are attached at the butt end with drywall screws... the only tension is under the bridge and yes, the cardboard box is beginning to collapse so its back to the drawing board.

hmm

very cool! this would be a fun mod for an electric upright. The main thing i don't like about those things is their lack of a big fat resonating chamber. Sounds like you need to make something similar to a typical electric upright- where the body, neck, and bridge are all part of the same structure, and then have the cardboard box fit around that somehow...

another homemade bass

>>>made any other instruments before?

yes, i made a fretless solidbody bass out of assorted scrap bass and guitar parts. the sound is totally wonderfuL. i have solos posted at http://www.myspace.com/thewet

my stuff is basicly trash, but fun.
