So you like to ride your bike and you live in the city of Chicago, but don't know where to ride? Well here is a set of Trail maps. Once you have decided where you ride, you should take a moment and go over the following tips that will help to make your journey a safe and enjoyable one.
1. Make sure your equipment is in good working order.
There are several places along the Lake Shore Drive trail that will do an inspection of your bike for free. Take them up on the offer, it could keep you from having an accident.
2. Wear appropriate clothing.
The weather in Chicago can change quickly especially in the
Spring and Fall. So wear proper clothing and maybe even bring a jacket.
3. Wear proper saftey equipment.
Eye protection and a helmet are a good start.
4. Communicate with others around you.
If you are overtaking, let them know by saying 'On your left'. If you plan to cross the path or make a left or right, use hand signals.
5. Be cautious around kids, pets, people not paying attention, etc.
I can't tell you the number of close calls I have had during busy times. I have yet to actually hit anyone in the 5 years I have been riding, but there have been some real close calls.
6. Use the CTA to get you to a trail.
Starting June 1st each year, they will allow upto 2 bikes to ride free on any bus or train during non rush hours.
7. Enjoy yourself.
This should be a time to get some excercise and maybe see a few things you have yet to visit.
8. Bring a camera and capture your adventure.
