1000 Beasts by glowingskeleton

glowingskeleton illustrated a series of one thousand illustrations of beasts which will be appearing in the the Fantagraphics art book Beasts! Volume 2 later on this year.

Jason bought Beasts! last year and it's actually quite a fascinating and eclectic book. The art book describes mythical beasts from around the world and the illustrations were provided by various talented artists.

How Speechballoons have Evolved

From bands to balloons, here is a site that explores the evolution of speechballoons.

From the site:

During the 18th century, British caricaturists changed the shape of speechballoons from gothic speech-bands or flags into fluffy balloons, our modern speechballoons.

I'm using the word speechballoon as the general, inclusive term. (The gothic form of speechballoons are speechbands, flags, scrolls or sheets of paper, the modern form of speechballoons are balloons, but also little rectangles, often rounded at the edges, or simply little blocks of text above the heads of the speaker etc, etc).

The 18th century term for speechballoons was 'labels'.

Here you can study various experiments and variations and the gradual change from bands to balloons. Even the later examples sometimes have tiny leftovers of the 'bands' on the other side of the balloon.

It's surprisingly interesting. Take a gander.

Batwoman has a makeover and returns as a lesbian

Batwoman is making a comeback and this time she is a crime fighting "lipstick lesbian" heroine.

Batwoman - real name Kathy Kane - will appear in 52, a year-long DC Comics publication that began this month.

In her latest incarnation, she is a rich socialite who has a romantic history with another 52 character, ex-police detective Renee Montoya.

To all you newbies out there, LwL stands for Lazy Weekend Links. To all you oldies out there, LwL is the same weekend links post you remember and love just abbreviated.

Why the change to the title? Well, I just got tired of typing Lazy Weekend Links and thought it would be cool to list the main topics of the post up in the title for a quick overview. Hope you guys like the change.

Now on to the links for this weekend:

Drew and Natalie, a married couple from Ohio, have put together a daily comic called Married to the Sea. Every day they post a hilarious comic using old-time illustrations.

Heck, I'm on a comic book roll... Somebody stop me! Bondage isn't my cup of tea, but I thought these comic book bondage covers of the day are pretty funny.

Here is a howto on making a rubberband helicopter. Pictures are included.

In the news: Guantanamo inmates attack guards. 'Inmates at the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have clashed with guards who were called in to prevent an apparent suicide attempt.'
