Vintage 3D Stereoviews of Old Japan

Okinawa Soba posted a fascinating flickr set of 3D stereoviews of old Japan.

Almos 60 of the stereoviews in this set were photographed by Japanese photographer T. ENAMI [His self-portrait in Japanese Armor is the face of my flickr Icon]. The rest are divided up mostly among works by HERBERT PONTING, HENRY STROHMEYER, AND JULIAN COCHRANE. A few other 3-D photographers from both Japan and abroad are also represented here.

Most of the views were taken during the years 1895 to 1910, with the majority taken ca.1898-1905.

I've been putting together a slideshow for my Lola's 100th birthday coming up in October. It's been a lot of work scanning photo after photo, but well worth it especially when you come across photos like the one above.

I'm not sure what year this photo was taken, but it was well before my time. Pictured are my cousins, aunts, Lola and Lolo enjoying cold bottles of Coke during a hot day in the Philippines. This photo is screaming retro Coke advertisement.

Splitting the Hive

Over the weekend, Jason, Colleen (Jason's mom) and Ted (beekeeping expert) split their hive in order to set up a secondary hive in another location. Chris Wiggins witnessed the hive splitting and lived to tell the tale. He wrote a great post over on his blog Beautiful Bokeh and also shared amazing photos he took on that day.

flickrvision is a site where you can see images uploaded to flickr throughout the world in real-time. It has a 3-D view, however, I'm unable to try out at the moment because it's being hit hard by digg users. From what I hear it's a very cool feature. Someone should definitely make a screensaver out of this. Link.

Rare World War I Color Photos

Over at srsly cool, rare color photos from World War I have been posted.

Little is known about each individual photo, they are believed to be digitally coloured. During WW1 colour photography was in it's infancy, pioneered by photographer Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud using Autochrome plates invented by the Lumiere brothers. These photos are either digitally remastered or works by Tournassoud.

Update: I originally located these photos at a forum but thanks to digg have since found a more descriptive source. I have updated the information on all of the photos but sadly the real details for most have been lost in time.

Life of a woman in photos

Here is an interesting series of photos found at a flea market:

Yesterday at the flea market I picked up a small cosmetics case stuffed with photos almost all of which were of the same woman. The bulk of the photos were photobooths and portraits documenting her as she aged over the course of about 50 years or so. I'll probably eventually put them all up over at Square America but until then here's a bunch- the dates where available are underneath each photo. Given the date of the first photo I figure she was born in late 1937 or early 1938. The last photo dates from the early 90s so she's somewhere in her early-to-mid 50s there.

Tina Roth Eisenberg is a Swiss designer who maintains the swissmiss blog. I love this photo she posted -- It's not an artistic photograph by any means, but very thought provoking given the title "Every morning I am tempted to go right..."
