One of the best kept mummies ever found, La Doncella or The Maiden, is the mummy of a teenage girl who froze to death more than 500 years ago in the Andes Mountains. Her death was part of a ritual sacrifice in which, according to archaeologists, she and two other younger children were left on a mountaintop in the freezing cold as offerings to their gods.
The mummy was found in Argentina in 1999. "National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Johan Reinhard, who co-led the expediction, described the discovery at the time as "the best preserved of any mummy I've seen." (National Geographic News)
