Puppy Linux running in OS X

Puppy Linux on Mac

I posted a fun little howto to hackszine today that you fellow geeks might enjoy. Using the Q virtual machine for OS X (it's a Cocoa port of QEMU), I was able to get Puppy Linux to run nicely on my Mac. If you haven't heard of it before, Puppy is a tiny desktop Linux distribution that's meant to run off of a bootable CD. It normally stores all of your files and save data to a file on a flash drive.

What's cool, though, is that you can virtualize the boot CD as well as a small virtual disk image. This lets you put the emulator application, the boot CD image, the virtual machine config, and the entire save state all on a single flash drive.

You can toss the QEMU Linux and Windows binaries on there as well, and have a private Linux box that fits in your pocket and will run on just about any desktop machine. Slick, no?

iPeep - DIY Security For iSight Equipped Macs

iPeep Mac Security Device
Does the built in iSight on your new Mac freak you out a little? Maybe it's that little Orwellian eye winking at you with the promise of a future in which you loose all "working from home" credibility by accidentally showing off your barely-tied bathrobe and unkempt hair in the middle of a business meeting.

The iPeep is a quick hack that physically secures your Mac from unwanted video snooping and allows you to turn the tables on peering eyes.

Here are its main features:

  • Security Mode: slide the iPeep slightly off-center so that it blocks your camera.
  • Full Access Mode: slide the iPeep several inches to the side. Best used with combed hair and proper attire.
  • Spook Mode: center the iPeep over the camera. Lean in and peek into the hole to freak out a would-be spy.
  • Sweet Design: okay, maybe not. Matching color scheme?

Go ahead. You can make one in like 5 seconds. It may be a little tongue-in-cheek, but go ahead and laugh. Psychologically, it's working for me and I think I'm going to keep using it.

Front Row Hacks

A New Front Row SkinFront Row is the cool little movie theatre app that comes packaged with the new iMacs, Mac Books (and Pros), and Mac Minis. For some reason, Apple decided not to enable Front Row in the OS updates for older machines, even though it can be operated from the keyboard in addition to the new IR remote.

Turns out you can enable the software on older machines with a few tweaks. Take a look at Front Row Enabler or edit a plist file if you are interested. The Front Row software is actually checking to see if there is a built in remote before it will run... reminds me of Apple's past crippling efforts: features like iBooks not doing dual screen and Final Cut not rendering real-time on iMacs and iBooks immediately come to mind.

Naughty Apple.

Anyway, enough about enabling Front Row... I wanted to give my Mac's movie system a custom look and feel for when friends stop over to watch vids. I wrote a howto for Make about skinning front row. It's actually pretty simple, so give it a shot and send me a url to your kickin' new theme in the comments!
