Kill Dash Nine: comp-sci hip hop

Monzy performing Kill Dash Nine at Stanford's Computer Science building.

It’s kill dash nine
No more CPU time
Because it’s kill dash 9
and your process is mine

I said kill dash nine
Because it’s my time to shine
Bitch you stepped outta line
And now it’s kill dash nine

The Truth Behind Tinfoil Hats

tin foil helmetThe government is trying to read and control our minds, or so the conspiracy goes.  Many believe that wearing tin foil helmets will protect our minds from radio waves controlled by the government.  Computer scientists at MIT ran a study in which they tested the effectiveness of tin foil helmets.  Once believed to protect us from mind manipulation, tin foil helmets seem to amplify the radio wave signals rather than block them:

Nintendo - Glee Club Style

All of you must think the University of Wisconsin - Madison is all about drinking, riots, and cheese.  Well, I'm here to prove you all wrong.

Check out Madtown's glee club doing an a capella medley of ol' school Nintendo favorites.

Programmer or Serial Killer

When Jason was staying with us, he got to watch a show with me (one of my favorites) called "Notorious". Basically its about Notorious people, either killers, or well...killers. So I found this little test called Killer Quiz. Can you tell if these guys are Programmers or Killers?

The True Geek Test

Ok, so there was an article on CNN about geek/nerd pride, and it made reference to the "The True Geek Test"

So, as I consider myself something of a Geek, I had to google it and go take it.

I got an 88%. The sheer fact that the author asked a
question loosely paraphrased here as:

"You have a sword, +2 vs Elves. What does that mean?"

Made me very happy. It's a great test. Have fun!

This Spartan Life

This Spartan LifeThe idea is clever: take a pop culture video game and use it's scenery, physics, and avatars as a stage for producing an original story.

A lot of people have been playing around with this film medium recently, and the results of their effort, like everything else, typically fall somewhere between really poor and really good.

This is fantastic.

This Spartan Life is a talk show which takes place in the world of Halo. Host Damian Lacedaemion interviews his guests on the subjects of architecture, interactive story telling, sex, fiction, games, life, and art, all while guiding them through the dangerous world of Halo, warding off attacks from violent interlopers.

The production value is very high, the music is top notch (complete with alien DJ technology), and the discussion is a gas. You really need to check it out - even if you don't play Halo.

Weighing the Internet - Slashdot Update

Kaorimoch writes, "Perhaps a better term would be "Counting the people on the internet"? That weighing stuff is for things with, well, MASS."

Hobotron also makes this point: "Bad sample population, low sample size with ONE DAY, NO inclusion of error propagation across statistical barriers. When you multiply estimates, you multiply error as well."

These and other great comments from the slashdot crowd really got me to thinking that my thouroughly researched scienterrific study really missed the boat.

Not typically one to miss the opportunity to futher the advancement of literal interpretation of analogy and armchair statistics, I leave you with the following thought.

Weighing the Internet

In 1798 Henry Cavendish, known for his scientific brilliance and terrible fear of women, developed a system for calculating the gravitational constant (G) by measuring the gravitational attraction between two small spheres. In essence, he was able to "weigh the earth" by comparing the relationship between two known objects.

This got to thinking about weighing the internet -- calculating the number of users online. Since I am by no means a brilliant scientist and am horribly attracted to women everywhere, there were obviously roadblocks in my path that Henry did not have to deal with.

Want to know how many internet users there are? Curious about how many people read a site like Slashdot every day? Read on!
