Kentucky congressman William Preston Taulbee was part of a scandalous newspaper article in 1887 where he was accused of having an affair with a lady known as Miss Dodge. Written by Washington correspondent for The Louisville Times and Kentucky native, Charles Kincaid, the facts in the article were and still are debated. Whether or not the two gentlemen despised each other before the story ran, rest assured their relationships blossomed into pure hate after the article went public.
I'm unsure if it was due to the scandal, but Taulbee did not seek re-election and became a lobbyist. The two men would bump into each other at the Capitol building and exchange unkind words over the next two years. Their last meeting occurred on Feb 28, 1890:
