Photo Essay: What the World Eats

what the world eats photo essay
Time has put together a very interesting photo essay called What the World Eats.  Families from all around the world are shown with all the food in their homes and share how much they spend on food per week as well as their favorite foods are.

This photo essay reminds me of a book that I have, which is called Material World.  If you haven't read this book I highly recommend checking it out.  Along the same concept as What the World Eats, families around the world display all of their material possessions.

'Doomsday' Vault, seed bank in case of global disaster

Doomsday Vault, Svalbard Internation Seed VaultNorway is planning to build a "doomsday vault" on a remote island near the North Pole that will hold 3 million seed samples.  There are currently 1,400 seed banks in the world, but due to political instability or harsh environmental changes these banks may prove to be insufficient.

The Norwegian government will be paying $5 million to construct the Svalbard International Seed Vault.  The final design of the vault has been unveiled; It will be built into a mountainside and should hopefully withstand any global catastrophes (climate changes, nuclear war), therefore, safeguarding the world's agriculture.

New planet?

so things tend to be strange, and how bout tht new planet ..

New Planet

It was first seen by astronomers using California's Mount Palomar Observatory, and has been given the name "Sedna" after the Inuit goddess of the ocean.

Observations show it measures about 1,180-2,360km (730-1,470 miles) across, making it similar in size to Pluto.

Astronomers now say they have evidence that Sedna has its own moon, although this needs to be confirmed, and is also very red in colour.

There is likely to be some debate about whether it qualifies as a true planet, but some scientists are already saying it re-defines our Solar System.
