Howto: Look good when recruiters google you

So how many times did you google yourself this month?  Probably at least one or two times.  I venture to guess you also googled old classmates or ex-loves.  It's okay.  We've all done it.

So, if you're googling him or her then who is googling YOU.  Don't be surprised if a potential employer asks you about those risque Spring Break photos you posted on your Myspace account at your next interview because anything on the internet is everyone's business.

Don't be caught off-guard.  Here is a howto on how to look good when your recruiter googles you.

Google Updates Search Result Page

Has anyone else noticed the new search results layout on Google? Go ahead, search for something and have a look-see for yourself:

New Google Search Result Layout

The whole left side of the page is now taken up by a column with links to the other search services, such as image search, group search, etc.  These links used to sit in a much more real-estate friendly location above the search bar.  Here's a screenshot of how it used to look (from the Google help page):
Old Google Search Results

I know it's not a super big difference, but it does seem like a waste of screen space and, more importantly, it's unfamiliar.  Google, what are you guys up to?  Did you run out of space above the search bar for all the cool new search features you'll be releasing soon?

Google Desktop 2.0! woot!

Well, needless to say, I just downloaded Google Desktop 2.0. It's amazing! The sidebar is really handy, intuitive, and smart. Some of the features include checking and displaying email automatically, adding your favorite RSS feeds automatically and showing the latest updates, and my favorite—the scratch pad. The scratch pad allows you to jot down notes and auto-saves them. Another cool thing is the "What's Hot" section, where the hottest things on the web are showed at the bottom. Check it out here.
I give it a 5/5!
