Make instant coffee with laser beams

instant laser coffeeWatch as these geeks make instant coffee using lasers.  If you don't have laser beams available to you, I'm pretty sure a microwave, tea kettle or coffee maker will do the same trick.

dirty french pressMy hubbie is a coffee ADDICT.  Every morning I fix him a fresh brew in our french press so he can be somewhat awake on his way to work.  The french press brews some delicious coffee (so I hear -- I'm not a coffee drinker), but oh, how I hate to clean it every day.

Here is a howto on how to properly clean your french press.  I've also added a howto on properly cleaning your coffee maker, which is another appliance I hate to clean.

Keep your makers clean because dirty appliances will effect the taste of your coffee.

Mortar shells turned into espresso machines

mortar shell espresso machinesAzmeraw Zeleke has turned old war-time waste into usable espresso machines.

In his workshop in Mekele, just 120 km from Ethiopia's border with Eritrea, Azmeraw Zeleke is turning burnt-out shells into cylinders used in coffee machines.

Most of the shells are left over from the 1998-2000 war between the two countries.

The workshop is made up of three quite small ramshackle rooms that lead from one to another with sunlight coming through the gaps, but it is a hive of activity for Mr Azmeraw and his six staff.

Coffee serves a special purpose in Ethiopia's economy and family well-being.  Using these old mortar shells from the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia from 1998 - 2000 shows that the people can overcome the violence and become at peace.

Coffee is a major export from Ethiopia and plays a big role in life.

After meals, the traditional coffee ceremony allows family and friends to get together to share news and discuss the issues of the day.

Latte Art

latte artThe other night, Jason and Kelly were on a mission to make the perfect espresso.  As they were chatting I overheard Kelly saying something about latte art.  Being the coffee idiot that I am, I asked, "What is latte art?"

Stamp Mugs: Coffee ringmarks made pretty

stamp mugAre you irritated by those pesky ringmarks your coffee mugs leave on your kitchen table?  Well, the real solution is to just use a saucer, but in case you like the ringmarks but just want to jazz them up you try these stamp mugs.  That's right...  stain your dining room table with some elegant coffee ringmarks.

Coffee lovers, if you are on the constant search for the best cup of coffee in the world you might just find it across the globe in the Philippines. Track the trail of the palm civet, a 'cat-like animal', scoop up its droppings and you've hit coffee gold.

The civets, or known locally as alamid, eat red coffee cherries that contain beans. The whole beans will pass through the civet and will gain unique flavors while fermenting in the civet's stomach.

Supposedly, civet coffee is some of the best coffee.  Give it a try once you get over the fact that it came from an animal's rear.
