Why Facebook Insights Matter

Here are some key reasons why Facebook Insights should be an integral part of your social media marketing:

  • Understand your audience – Facebook Insights provides demographic data like age, gender, location and language of your audience. This allows you to create targeted content that resonates.

  • See what content performs best – You can see which of your posts get the most Likes, shares and comments. This makes it easy to identify what types of content your audience responds to.

  • Track engagement over time – You can view trends in your Facebook engagement over days, weeks or months. This helps you evaluate the impact of your marketing efforts.

  • Optimize calls-to-action – See which calls-to-action like link clicks, Lead ads and button clicks are most effective with your audience.

  • Discover new audience segments – Facebook‘s detailed targeting allows you to find new niche segments that may be perfect for your products or services.

The data and competitive intelligence you get from Insights is invaluable for connecting with your audience and boosting your results on Facebook.

Prerequisites for Facebook Insights

To get Facebook Insights integrated with your WordPress site, there are 2 key prerequisites:

1. The WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin

The WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast makes it easy to connect your WordPress site with Facebook Insights.

With over 5 million active installs, it is the most popular SEO and marketing plugin for WordPress.

If you don‘t already have it installed, you can download and activate it for free from the official WordPress plugin repository.

2. A Facebook Page for Your Website

To access Insights, you need to have a Facebook Page specifically for your website. This allows Facebook to track engagement and metrics from your audience.

If you don‘t already have one, create a Facebook Page for your website. Make sure to use the same name as your domain.

You‘ll also need to be an Admin of the Page to connect it to your WordPress site.

Now that you have the prerequisites covered, let‘s move on to the implementation.

Step 1 – Connect Facebook to WordPress SEO Plugin

Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to SEO > Social in the left menu. Then click on the Facebook tab.

Facebook tab in WordPress SEO plugin

Under Facebook Admins, click on Add Facebook Admin. This will open up a window prompting you to log into Facebook.

Log in with the same Facebook account that is the Admin for your Facebook Page. Grant permission for the connection.

You‘ll then be redirected back to your WordPress dashboard, with your Facebook account name now listed under the Facebook admins:

This establishes the connection between your WordPress site and Facebook account.

Step 2 – Install the XFBML Facebook Like Button

For Facebook Insights to work properly, you need to have the XFBML version of the Facebook Like button installed on your site.

The WordPress SEO plugin makes this easy. Go to Social > Facebook and copy the Page Plugin Code under the Like Button section:

Paste this code wherever you want your Like button to appear – in your blog posts, pages, widgets etc.

You can add it multiple times across your site to maximize opportunities for Likes. Just make sure each instance uses the XFBML code from the plugin.

Step 3 – Verify Site Ownership on Facebook

The last step is to verify ownership of your website on Facebook.

Go to your Facebook Page Insights and under Your Pages, click on Add Your Website:

Add Your Website button in Facebook Insights

In the pop-up, enter your website‘s domain name and check the box saying you‘re an Admin of the site:

Verify website ownership in Facebook Insights

Click Add Website. Facebook will place a cookie on your site to confirm you own it.

Within a few days, once users start interacting with your content, data will start populating in Facebook Insights.

Accessing Your Facebook Insights

Now you can access your Insights anytime by going to your Facebook Page Insights and clicking on your website under Your Websites:

Facebook Insights data

You can view data on your top posts, audience demographics, post reach, page engagement and more.

Here are some of the key metrics and how they can help guide your strategy:

Metric Use
Top Posts by Reach See which posts help you reach the most people to inform content creation.
Most engaging posts Identify what content resonates highly with your audience.
Audience Demographics Craft content that appeals specifically to your audience.
Page Views Track how many people view your Page over time.
Post Reach Measure how many unique people you reach with each post.

Tips for Acting on Facebook Insights

Here are some tips from my experience as a webmaster on making the most of the data from Facebook Insights:

  • Look for trends – Review data over longer periods to identify trends and seasonality. This can highlight what works consistently.

  • Test different content types – Try different types of posts like video, images, links, or text-only status updates. See what content your audience prefers.

  • Experiment with messaging – Play around with phrasing, emojis, captions, and keywords. Measure what content style resonates best.

  • Refine targeting – Use Facebook‘s detailed targeting capabilities to double down on who your content reaches based on interests, demographics etc.

  • Respond and interact – Reply to comments and engage directly with your audience. People want to feel heard.

Custom Audiences – Create audience segments based on email lists, website engagement etc and target content to those specific groups.

The key is to continually test and optimize based on the data. Facebook Insights enables you to create social content tailored to your audience.
