Corralling Yellowstone Streaming in the U.S.

For audiences in the good ‘ol U.S. of A., Peacock is undoubtedly the best grazing pasture for streaming Yellowstone. As the exclusive streaming home for the series, Peacock offers on-demand access to all previous seasons of Yellowstone, including the critically-acclaimed first half of Season 5 that aired last fall.

When the back half of Season 5 premieres this summer (July/August 2024), new episodes will also become available on Peacock within a day or two of airing live on cable’s Paramount Network. This is much faster than other platforms.

Now Peacock may not be as well-known as a Netflix or Hulu, but the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service has made huge strides in both content and technology. They now boast over 80 million global subscribers as of late 2022.

Let’s compare the two paid Peacock subscription tiers:

Peacock Premium – $4.99/month

  • Full Yellowstone catalog available
  • Stream on mobile, web, and connected TV platforms
  • Limited to 5 hours of rolling video per profile
  • Ads included at 5 minutes/hour

Peacock Premium Plus – $9.99/month

  • Full Yellowstone catalog
  • Download shows for offline viewing
  • 10 hours of rolling video per profile
  • Ad-free viewing

Based on my analysis, the Premium tier offers the best bang for your buck and is all you need for access to Yellowstone. The ads are fairly unobtrusive, and 5 hours of video rolls over each day, letting you binge multiple episodes no problem.

However, frequent travelers may prefer downloading Yellowstone episodes to watch offline on long flights, a capability limited to the Premium Plus tier.

Beyond Peacock, a few other ways for cord-cutters to stream the latest Yellowstone episodes include:

  • Hulu + Live TV ($70+/month) – Offers live Paramount Network access plus huge on-demand library. Can also use Hulu credentials on Paramount Network’s app.

  • YouTube TV, Sling TV, FuboTV ($35-$85/month) – Leading live TV streaming services that carry Paramount Network for Yellowstone live viewing and recent episodes on-demand.

  • Paramount Network App (cable/satellite subscription required) – If you already pay for Paramount Network through a TV package, you can use your credentials to unlock the standalone Paramount app for new episodes.

Now in terms of security, after reviewing their privacy policies I find Paramount and Peacock to offer reasonable data protections comparable to other top streaming platforms. I always recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on any streaming account for an extra layer of account security.

Roping in Yellowstone Streams Beyond Borders

So Peacock makes streaming Yellowstone easy if you’re in America. But for fans outside the U.S., it gets trickier with geo-restrictions blocking access.

The easiest hack? A VPN. A virtual private network allows you to bypass regional blocks by routing your web traffic through servers in other countries. I’d suggest these two top-rated VPNs based on my hands-on testing:

ExpressVPN – Super fast speeds and reliable connections make it ideal for HD streaming. User-friendly apps, 24/7 support, no traffic logs.

NordVPN – Large network of servers including dedicated streaming servers. Unblocks all major platforms. Allows torrenting. Strict no-logs policy.

Here’s how to watch Yellowstone with a VPN:

  1. Sign up for ExpressVPN or NordVPN and download the app
  2. Run the app and connect to any U.S.-based server
  3. Go to Peacock TV in your browser or app and sign up for a subscription
  4. Enjoy streaming every episode of Yellowstone as if you were in the USA!

I suggest an annual VPN subscription versus monthly so you can amortize the cost. Expect to pay $6 to $12 per month.

The other fail-safe method is purchasing full Yellowstone seasons or episodes from digital retailers like Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, or Microsoft. Downloaded video can of course be viewed anywhere globally without geo-restrictions. A purchased season in HD runs $15 to $20 typically.

Now some lucky fans abroad may also have access to Yellowstone on local streaming outlets or pay TV channels, for instance:

  • Paramount+ Canada
  • W Network Canada
  • Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland

But a VPN is your insurance policy if the show is unavailable in your region. Just connect to a U.S. server and stream away on Peacock!

Purchasing the Yellowstone Collection

I get it, sometimes it just feels right to own your favorite shows outright digitally rather than deal with fractured streaming availability. Thankfully, purchasing Yellowstone by the episode or season is easy and offers you perpetual mobile access. Here are the top download stores:

Amazon Prime Video – Full seasons or single episodes available for SD, HD, and 4K UHD streaming/downloads where supported. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on select devices.

Apple TV – Buy individual episodes or whole seasons. Stream/download in SD, HD, and 4K HDR quality. AirPlay viewing.

Google Play – SD and HD episodes/seasons to own digitally. Stream via Android, Roku, Chromecast. Limited downloads.

Vudu – Supports up to 4K Dolby Vision purchased content. App works on Roku, Fire TV, smart TVs.

Microsoft Store – Purchase individual episodes or full seasons in SD, HD, and 4K to own. Stream on Windows, Xbox, mobile.

On most platforms you can expect to pay between $15-$30 per season in HD quality. Newly released episodes in HD go for around $3 each. I suggest comparing prices across retailers.

Now the limitation of purchasing is that you won’t get the final episodes of Season 5 until after they finish broadcasting. But owning Yellowstone offers advantages like:

  • Permanent access to replay anytime
  • Higher HD and 4K quality streaming
  • Downloading for offline mobile viewing
  • Avoiding streaming platform availability hassles

Between widespread digital purchase options and the VPN trick, Yellowstone fans worldwide can easily wrangle up their ideal viewing experience.

Wrangling the Yellowstone Prequels and Spinoffs

With the incredible success of Yellowstone, creator Taylor Sheridan has been expanding the Dutton family saga in some exciting prequel and spinoff series:

1883 (2021) – This first Western prequel follows the earlier Dutton generation heading West to establish the Yellowstone ranch, starring Tim McGraw and Sam Elliott. Where to watch: Paramount+ (U.S.), Amazon Prime Video purchase

1923 (2022) – The upcoming second prequel jumps ahead to follow a new generation of Duttons (with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren) as they face Western expansion, prohibition, and the Great Depression. Coming to Paramount+ in December 2024.

6666 (2024) – Forthcoming series focusing on the historic 6666 (Four Sixes) cattle ranch in Texas, exploring a different side of the Yellowstone universe. Airing on Paramount Network.

Bass Reeves (2024) – Samuel L. Jackson headlines this spinoff about the legendary U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves. Launching on Paramount+ in 2024.

Similar to Yellowstone, U.S. viewers can stream these spinoffs on Paramount’s streaming platforms. And fans abroad can leverage a VPN to access that geo-restricted content. Though networks in some countries do air certain spinoffs, a VPN gives you the most options.

Personally, I can’t wait to see 1923 with legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren! I will definitely be investing in a Paramount+ subscription to watch weekly and relive the dramatic early history of the Dutton empire.

Wrangling My Own Spinoff as a Cloud Engineer!

As a cloud engineer and streaming connoisseur myself, Yellowstone‘s massive popularity gives me fun thought experiments around how I would approach the challenge of delivering this iconic show to audiences worldwide.

While the major entertainment platforms have an army of engineers, if I were in charge of the Yellowstone streaming architecture and infrastructure, here are some things I would focus on:

Geo-distributed microservices – Spin up servers/CDNs across the globe to run regional microservices that provide low latency streams for local versions of the app and catalog.

Auto-scaling groups – Use autoscaling to immediately spin up extra server capacity in each region when demand spikes, like for new episode releases or promotional events.

Global load balancing – Route traffic intelligently across regions to maintain optimal uptime and response times. Shift loads away from poor performing zones.

Caching layers – Employ distributed caching systems like Redis and CloudFront to serve content faster by keeping it at the edge near viewers.

Security best practices – Comprehensive security measures across infrastructure and apps including encryption, vulnerability scanning, access controls, DDoS protection.

Redundancy and backups – Build redundancy at every layer, with multi-region database replication, hot standbys, cross-AZ load balancing, object versioning, etc.

Performance monitoring – Rigorous monitoring provides visibility into bottlenecks like congested servers, slow database queries, or glitchy encodings. Proactively address issues.

Cost optimization – Right-size server instances, automate shutdown of unused capacity, reserve plans to reduce cloud costs, architect for efficiency.

With the right cloud architecture and procedures in place, I’m confident I could provide an ultra-responsive, highly secure, and cost-effective Yellowstone streaming platform accessible to audiences globally. Of course, that’s just the infrastructure piece – licensing and contracts introduce a whole separate rodeo of complexity!

Ride Off into the Streaming Sunset

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I just binge-watched a full season of Yellowstone with all this talk of VPNs, streaming availability, security considerations, global infrastructure planning and more. What can I say, I just love geeking out on this technology stuff!

Hopefully you now feel empowered to access and watch Yellowstone hassle-free regardless of where you are located. With a few shortcuts and workarounds, any fan can ride along with the Dutton family from anywhere worldwide.

I don’t know what twists and turns are in store for the climactic back half of Season 5 this summer. But I can’t wait to saddle up with my fellow viewers and find out! See you around the virtual campfire for more epic adventures from the Yellowstone ranch. Just don’t forget the s’mores.

Happy streaming!
